Future Climate Changes - A Challenge for the German Economy
24.3.2003
With the EU Resolution on Emission Trading, the actors concerned have at their disposal a wide spectrum of flexible and prohibitive options for action in order to comply with the international restrictions on the emission of gases producing the greenhouse gas effect. For the respective actors in the economy, these obligations will become the framework conditions for their future economic actions – irrespective of the controversial assessment of world-wide climatic risks and the establishment of international frameworks. In this respect, the obligations taken over and still to be expected, as well as the possibilities for meeting them, must be viewed in a differentiated manner: the corresponding consequences and options must be judged differently at national, sectoral, and enterprise levels.
This subject was discussed at an expert discussion meeting, attended by 20 participants from the fields of research and economy, which took place in co-operation with the Federal German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) on the premises of the Europäische Akademie. In addition to fundamental questions that emerged against the background of publications issued by the academy, implications for industry and potentials for the service sector were discussed.
The contributions were published in Volume 34 of the series “Graue Reihe” of the Europäische Akademie.
The speakers were: Dr. N. Binder (BMBF), Dr. J. Engelhard (RWE Rheinbraun), Dr. G. Hanekamp (Europäische Akademie), Professor G. Klepper (Institut für Weltwirtschaft), Dr. J. Rothermel (Verband der Chemischen Industrie), M. Rumberg (Gerling) und P. Seipold (Otto GmbH).
