Genetic engineering and its place in the (Post-)Modern World
11.12.1998
This expert meeting convened to analyse the social impacts of modern DNA technology from the point of view of social anthropology. Dr. Stefansson started out by explaining the notion of “modernity” and presented a model of integrated macroinstitutions in modern societies. On the basis of this structure, the consequences and influence of actual and hypothetical possibilities of DNA technologies on individual macroinstitutions was demonstrated and the role of such technologies as part of the transition to a post-modern society was discussed.
Participants: Dr. Halldor Stefansson, European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Heidelberg (Referent), Dr. Michael Decker, Priv.-Doz. Armin Grunwald, Dr. Mathias Gutmann, Dr. Eva Neumann-Held, Dr. Felix Thiele, Dr. Anja Weigmann.
