Responsibility for Future Generations. Implementation of Sustainability in Schooling
A successful implementation of the concept of sustainability into social planning and acting presupposes that it is being supported by as many people as possible. Thus, the assumption of responsibility for future generations requires a broad development of competences in percepting, reflecting upon and solving problems of long-term dimension. Up until the present, the advancement of such competences has not been a systematic subject of schooling and thus, only, occasionally appears in the curricula.
Therefore, the implementation of such topics into schooling has become an aim of some programmes and initiatives of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). This project will develop the foundation for this integration process and serve as accompanying measures to the programme “Research for Climate Protection and Protection from Climate Impacts”.
Three special challenges have to be met: Disciplines such as practical philosophy, theory of decision making and risk analysis, which up to now have been marginal in schooling, become central for the work in these areas; a special and relatively young field of research – partly, and controversially discussed within the scientific community – must be didactically prepared in a suitable way; the interdisciplinary character of these topics may demand a readjustment of methodology. In order to deal with these tasks adequately, an interdisciplinary research group is necessary, the results of which should be tested in a classroom setting. The project group’s proposals and recommendations regarding a more intensive integration of sustainability topics into the education arena are aimed at educational policy, training institutions, and relevant occupational groups and organisations.
